Grand County opened Friday night with a 75-yard touchdown connection from quarterback Corbin Black to Beto Carroll and a 6–0 lead on its home field, but Hayden seized control after a turnover and eventually ended the game under Utah’s mercy-rule provision following the third quarter.
The Red Devils produced explosive plays early and again late in the third quarter, yet Hayden’s ability to capitalize on a Grand County fumble altered the game’s direction. Carroll caught two long touchdown passes from Black, offering clear evidence of the offense’s big-play potential even as the Tigers steadily expanded their advantage.
Grand County Strikes First
Grand County needed little time to generate energy around the home crowd.
During one of the Red Devils’ first offensive possessions, Black connected with Carroll on a play that turned into a 75-yard touchdown. Carroll broke into open space and finished the explosive gain in the end zone, giving Grand County an early 6–0 lead.
The play immediately established the threat posed by the Red Devils’ passing attack. Black found Carroll downfield, and Carroll converted the opportunity into a decisive scoring play that covered 75 yards from start to finish.

Grand County’s defense then prevented Hayden from answering immediately. The early resistance gave the Red Devils another opportunity to build on their advantage, while the offense returned to the field looking to sustain its initial momentum.
For a stretch, Grand County appeared positioned to turn its fast start into a larger lead.
Turnover Reverses Momentum
The game’s pivotal shift came during another Grand County possession.
With the Red Devils moving the ball and in position to add to their lead, Grand County lost a fumble. Hayden recovered the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown, transforming a potential Grand County scoring opportunity into an immediate change on the scoreboard.
The Tigers then converted the ensuing two-point attempt. In a matter of moments, Hayden moved from trailing 6–0 to leading 8–6.
That sequence carried significance beyond the eight points themselves. Grand County had begun the possession with a chance to establish a two-score advantage. Instead, Hayden created a defensive touchdown and took the lead, placing the Red Devils in a position of pursuit.
The turnover also gave Hayden renewed confidence on both sides of the football. The Tigers had stopped Grand County’s drive, produced points directly from the takeaway and added the two-point conversion to complete the momentum swing.

Hayden Builds Separation
After taking the lead, Hayden began finding more consistent success offensively and defensively.
The Tigers steadily created separation on the scoreboard, while Grand County faced the increasingly difficult task of slowing Hayden’s attack and restoring the rhythm that produced the opening touchdown.
The Red Devils continued to compete for opportunities, but the game no longer carried the same early balance. Hayden’s defense challenged Grand County’s ability to sustain drives, and the Tigers’ offense continued to widen the margin.
For Grand County, the response required discipline in several areas. The Red Devils needed to protect the football, extend possessions and prevent Hayden from turning one successful sequence into a larger run of momentum.
Those challenges became more pronounced as the game progressed. The early 6–0 advantage had disappeared, and the 8–6 Hayden lead became the turning point in a night that increasingly favored the Tigers.

Black and Carroll Connect Again
Grand County did not stop searching for a breakthrough.
That opportunity arrived late in the third quarter, when Black returned to the connection that had produced the Red Devils’ first score. The quarterback found Carroll for another long touchdown, marking the second scoring connection between the two players during the game.
The play supplied another burst of offensive production and underscored Carroll’s ability to make an impact downfield. It also demonstrated that Grand County retained the capacity to generate explosive plays despite Hayden’s growing control.
The second touchdown was Grand County’s final score of the night.
Although the play could not erase Hayden’s advantage, it gave the Red Devils another positive sequence to carry forward. The two long scoring connections between Black and Carroll represented the clearest evidence of Grand County’s offensive potential and provided a foundation for future improvement.

Mercy Rule Ends the Game
Hayden’s lead eventually reached the threshold required under Utah’s mercy-rule provision.
The game ended following the third quarter, bringing Grand County’s comeback effort to a close before the Red Devils could play a full fourth quarter.
The shortened finish did not diminish the significance of the lessons presented during the game. Grand County showed that it could strike quickly, defend effectively during the opening stages and produce explosive plays through the Black-to-Carroll connection.
At the same time, the loss identified areas requiring immediate attention.
- Protecting the football will be a central priority after Hayden converted the Grand County fumble into a touchdown.
- Sustaining offensive drives will be essential to prevent opponents from controlling field position and tempo.
- Defensive discipline must remain consistent when an opponent begins building momentum.
- Turning explosive plays into longer periods of offensive production will be important moving forward.
The Red Devils were not without answers. Their opening touchdown and late third-quarter score demonstrated that the offense could create game-changing moments. The challenge will be producing those moments more consistently while limiting the mistakes that allow opponents to respond.
Lessons Beyond the Scoreboard
Friday’s result provided a complicated evaluation for Grand County.
The Red Devils showed the ability to generate immediate offense, with Carroll’s 75-yard touchdown reception setting an aggressive tone. Black and Carroll then connected again late in the third quarter, reinforcing the potential of the passing game.
The turnover, however, changed the contest. Hayden’s fumble recovery and touchdown return not only erased Grand County’s early advantage but also gave the Tigers the lead after the successful two-point attempt.
From there, Hayden asserted control.
For a team still working to establish consistency, the game offered both encouragement and correction. Grand County’s explosive plays were real and significant, but so was the importance of ball security, sustained execution and defensive resistance when momentum shifts.
Those adjustments will determine whether the Red Devils can turn isolated highlights into more complete performances.
Red Devils Prepare for the Road
Grand County will have little time to dwell on the Hayden loss.
The Red Devils return to action Friday, Sept. 11, when they travel north to face Utah Military Academy–Hill Field. The matchup will provide Grand County with an immediate opportunity to build on the positives from Friday night while addressing the mistakes that allowed Hayden to take control.
The Black-to-Carroll connection has already produced two long touchdowns, and Grand County has demonstrated that it can create explosive plays against a competitive opponent. The next step is extending that production across four quarters, protecting possessions and limiting the momentum swings that proved decisive against Hayden.
