Utah State converted its Homecoming opportunity into a 21-10 victory over Troy on Saturday, September 26, at Maverik Stadium in Logan, using a 14-point third quarter and a defense that shut out the Trojans after halftime. The Aggies improved to 1-3, while Troy dropped to 2-2 in the fourth meeting between the programs. Official attendance was 22,037.
Utah State won despite Troy holding a substantial time-of-possession advantage. The Trojans controlled the ball for 34:16 compared with Utah State’s 25:42, but the Aggies produced the more decisive plays. Utah State finished with 413 total yards-171 rushing and 242 passing, while Troy recorded 395 yards, including 169 on the ground and 226 through the air.
The result also marked Utah State’s 11th win in its last 15 Homecoming games, according to the official Utah State Athletics recap.
Brosterhous powers the Aggies
Quarterback Grady Brosterhous delivered a career-best dual-threat performance, completing 18 of 28 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He added 89 rushing yards on 15 carries, giving him 331 total yards.
Brosterhous immediately established Utah State’s vertical threat. On the Aggies’ first offensive play, he connected with Javon Robinson for a 57-yard touchdown pass. Robinson broke free after the catch, and the explosive gain gave Utah State a 7-0 lead with 13:46 remaining in the first quarter.
The opening touchdown was Utah State’s first score on its first offensive play from scrimmage since Jaylen Warren’s 86-yard touchdown against Fresno State in 2020, according to the Utah State Athletics recap.
Brosterhous continued to extend plays with his legs throughout the game. His rushing total included several key scrambles, and his movement helped Utah State counter a Troy defense that limited the Aggies’ early running lanes. Javen Jacobs supplied 84 rushing yards on 14 carries and scored the Aggies’ third-quarter rushing touchdown.

Eli Wood led Utah State’s receiving corps with seven receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown. Robinson finished with four catches for 67 yards, including the 57-yard score, while Nikko Boncore added four receptions for 66 yards.
The Aggies’ offense finished with 19 first downs and averaged 7.0 yards per play. Troy generated 26 first downs and ran 80 plays to Utah State’s 59, but the Aggies’ efficiency produced the difference on the scoreboard.

Defense takes over after halftime
Utah State’s defense asserted control after the break, holding Troy scoreless across the final two quarters. The Aggies forced three interceptions and also stopped the Trojans on a fourth-down possession.
Brevin Hamblin led the defense with 12 tackles and an interception. David Kabongo added another interception, while Utah State’s defensive backs repeatedly disrupted Troy’s passing game in critical situations.
Troy quarterback Goose Crowder completed 25 of 49 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Trojans moved the ball between the 20-yard lines, but Utah State consistently stifled scoring opportunities. Troy converted only four of 13 third downs and finished 0-for-2 on fourth-down attempts.
The defensive discipline was especially important because Troy controlled possession and created 26 first downs. Utah State did not win by keeping the Trojans off the field; it won by forcing the Trojans to finish drives under pressure.
Hamblin’s interception arrived late in the fourth quarter, when Troy was attempting to move back into contention. Kabongo then secured the final interception with less than a minute remaining, thwarting Troy’s last meaningful opportunity.
The third-quarter swing
Troy entered halftime with a 10-7 advantage after scoring a first-quarter touchdown and a second-quarter field goal. The Trojans’ lead, however, disappeared quickly after Utah State received the second-half kickoff.
The Aggies opened the third quarter with a 75-yard touchdown drive. Brosterhous found Wood for gains of 18 and 25 yards, including a fourth-down conversion from Troy’s 30-yard line. The quarterback and receiver finished the possession with a five-yard touchdown connection, putting Utah State ahead 14-10 with 11:02 remaining in the quarter.
Utah State then capitalized on another possession to build separation. Jacobs powered through for a six-yard touchdown run at the 4:51 mark, capping an 80-yard drive and extending the lead to 21-10.
That two-score surge changed the structure of the game. Troy had led 10-7 at halftime, but Utah State’s offense produced touchdowns on its first two third-quarter possessions while the defense prevented the Trojans from answering.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Utah State’s defense protected the 11-point margin, and the offense used a late possession to drain time before Landon Rehkow pinned Troy deep with another effective punt.
Troy’s offense and turnovers
Troy’s offense showed enough early production to create a competitive first half. The Trojans answered Robinson’s 57-yard touchdown with a long scoring drive that ended in a touchdown pass from Crowder. Troy then moved in front on Ethan Head’s 45-yard field goal with 10:24 remaining in the second quarter.
Running back Gavin Griffin led Troy on the ground with 66 yards on 11 carries. Receiver Noreel White recorded 75 receiving yards, while Troy’s passing attack generated 226 yards overall.
The problem emerged in the second half, when Utah State’s defensive backs began converting pressure into possession-changing plays. Crowder threw three interceptions, and the Trojans also failed to convert a fourth-down attempt. Described precisely, Troy committed three interceptions plus a turnover on downs; the official Utah State recap groups those moments as four turnovers when the fourth-down stop is included.
Troy also missed two second-half field-goal attempts, one from 28 yards and another from 48 yards. Those misses became more costly as Utah State’s lead expanded and the Trojans were forced to chase points.
The turnover margin did not erase Troy’s statistical advantages in possession or first downs, but it prevented those advantages from becoming points. Utah State’s defense repeatedly ended drives before Troy could convert field position into a second-half score.

Homecoming atmosphere and what comes next
The victory came before an official Homecoming attendance of 22,037 at Maverik Stadium, where Utah State secured its first win of the 2026 season. The Aggies also narrowed the immediate gap in a series Troy had led 2-1 entering the matchup.
Utah State now moves into its first Pac-12 contest of the season. The Aggies are scheduled to travel to face No. 22 Boise State on Saturday, October 3, at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time, according to the official Utah State Athletics recap.
The Homecoming win lifted Utah State to 1-3 and provided a clear blueprint for the next phase of the schedule: pair Brosterhous’ mobility and downfield accuracy with a defense capable of forcing turnovers and closing games. Troy, meanwhile, returns to Sun Belt competition at 2-2 after being held scoreless in the second half.
